Pay Us, Or We’ll Go Back To Creeks - Ex-Militants Warn FG
The National Chairman of the group, which consists of about 10,000 members in the nine oil producing states, Julius Joseph, said the Federal Government is yet to keep to its terms of agreement after they surrendered their arms two years ago.
He said members of his group have endured for too long. “If the government is not ready to give us our entitlement, then they should return our arms. We are hungry; we want to go back to the creeks.
“We have tried to reach the President through the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, but he has refused to attend to us. We have tried different means of dialogue but nobody is listening to us. We even wrote a petition to the Senate President but there was no response.
“We are open to dialogue. We want to dialogue, yet the government doesn’t want to dialogue with us. They want to dialogue with Boko Haram that are faceless. We are not faceless, yet they don’t want to dialogue with us,” he stated.
The vice chairman of the group, Henry Gomerome, said the Federal Government is supposed to pay them a monthly salary of N65, 000.00 for each ex-militant. “For over two years nothing has been paid. It is for that reason that we blocked Lokoja road in December last year. We were actually heading for Abuja, but we were stopped at Lokoja. We are going to block another major road if our demands are not met,” he said.
After the Lokoja incident the national chairman said the group was invited to Abuja for a meeting, where they were not allowed to talk. “They forced us to sign an undertaking that we will not disturb the Federal Government again because they will give us our entitlement. But up till now, nothing has happened,” the group stated.
Prieye John, Delta State chairman of the group, said the Federal Government had been unfair to them. “This is injustice. Everything they promised us, none has been fulfilled. This is really bad, after we surrendered about 21,890 arms and JTF gave us certificate that they have received them. We have been patient enough,” he stated.
